DeepSeek: What’s the Story Now That the Dust Has Settled?

After some time has passed, the initial hype around DeepSeek has started to settle, and the conversation is now focusing on what this new development actually means for the world of AI. DeepSeek has sparked significant discussions, and it’s important to break down what’s really going on—what it is, and what it is not.

What It Is

1. A Big Moment for the Open Source Community
One of the most exciting aspects of DeepSeek is that it’s driven by the open-source community. This is a big deal for many in the tech world who have been waiting for a breakthrough that brings open-source AI to the forefront. The ability to freely share and modify code has allowed more people to build on existing knowledge, which will ultimately accelerate innovation.

2. Revolutionizing Efficiency and Cost-Effectiveness in Artificial Intelligence
DeepSeek AI revolutionized artificial intelligence by solving four major challenges that made traditional models inefficient and expensive. By using a “Mixture of Experts” approach, DeepSeek only activates the most relevant experts for each task, making it far more efficient. They tackled problems like uneven workload distribution, excessive communication overhead, slow hardware, and expert specialization, all while optimizing performance even on cheaper, slower chips. The result is a highly efficient and reliable system that outperforms traditional models, proving that AI can be both powerful and cost-effective without sacrificing quality.

3. A Complex Balance of Openness and Secrecy

While DeepSeek benefits from the vast foundation of AI research developed in the US, the Chinese team behind the technology is a unique case in itself. The DeepSeek team is entirely Chinese, and despite building on the open-source tools and algorithms available globally, the inner workings of their project remain surprisingly closed off. This contrast creates an interesting paradox: DeepSeek contributes to the global open-source movement by sharing some of its technology freely, yet the team’s operations and innovations are largely shrouded in mystery. It’s somewhat amusing, considering China’s growing involvement in open-source development, yet the internal dynamics of DeepSeek remain tight-knit, with little insight into how the team collaborates or the full scope of their work. This closed-door approach reflects the realities of China’s tech scene today—a mixture of global collaboration and national secrecy.

4. A Political Statement from China
It’s also important to note that DeepSeek’s release wasn’t just a technological development—it was a political statement as well. The timing of the release seems to coincide with political shifts, possibly in response to the Stargate announcement. The Chinese government, through this innovation, is not just advancing AI but also reinforcing its standing in global technology and strengthening its domestic image. It’s clear that China is positioning itself as a leader in the space, not only to compete with the US but also to keep its people onside.

What It Is Not

1. Doom and Gloom for the AI Tech Players
Despite the initial drop in stock prices for AI companies, the situation is far from a disaster. Yes, stocks took a hit, but they are already climbing back up, proving that the initial panic was short-lived. DeepSeek's arrival doesn’t mean the end of established players in the AI space; it just signals a new wave of competition.

2. An Overnight Revolution for Everyone
While the idea that you can build an AI model for just $6 million might sound tempting, it’s not entirely accurate. Yes, DeepSeek offers a more affordable path to developing powerful models, but it’s not as simple as just spending a few million dollars. You still need a highly skilled team and significant computational resources, which can easily amount to hundreds of millions in investment. DeepSeek might have made strides in cost reduction, but it is far from a “do-it-yourself” situation.

3. Europe Catching Up Easily
Another myth that’s being floated around is the idea that Europe, which has lagged behind the US and China in AI development, can suddenly leapfrog into the race with minimal investment. The claim that Europe can catch up by simply spending millions is misleading. While there are certainly efforts to grow AI research and innovation in Europe, the math doesn’t add up when compared to the enormous investments being made in places like the US and China. The $50 million poured into European AI projects is small change compared to the $500 billion investment behind initiatives like Stargate. Update: now we have EUR 200B investment in Europe (just announced in Paris) coming from a public/private partnership. Let's see if the rubber indeed hits the road now. Money is one thing but cultural change yet another.

The Start-Up Boom

DeepSeek has energized the start-up ecosystem, according to Niko Bonatsos, a venture capital investor at General Catalyst. In fact, some start-ups have already taken advantage of DeepSeek’s open-source technology, creating their own “forked” versions of the model, which means they’ve copied and customized it to suit their needs.

In just a few days, more than 600 versions of DeepSeek had been created on Hugging Face, a platform that fosters collaboration among AI companies. Clément Delangue, CEO of Hugging Face, highlighted how quickly the community had embraced the new technology. This rapid adoption shows just how impactful DeepSeek has been for smaller companies and developers eager to get into the AI space without the hefty price tag.

The Future of AI

As the dust settles, it’s clear that DeepSeek has set a new precedent for AI development, both in terms of accessibility and innovation. But investors and industry experts are bracing for more surprises in the coming weeks, as AI continues to be a fast-evolving and unpredictable space. As Mr. Jacobs, an industry analyst, put it, “A.I. is such a dynamic space that there is something wild that happens almost every day.”

The next phase of AI development could bring even more exciting opportunities—and challenges. For now, it’s clear that DeepSeek has created waves, but the ultimate impact will unfold over time.
